Recently, John McSherry, Kevin Brummer, Tom Kisker, David Hayes, Matt Donahue and Rolando Archila completed a Basic Gas Metal Arc (MIG) Welding course at Gateway Community and Technical College. The ten-week program covered a range of tools and techniques, including the six most common welding types.

Though none of the newly aspiring welders had ever expressed interest in the craft, a simple suggestion was all it took to spark their interest.

“Signing up for the course just started out as something unique and interesting to do as a group,” explained VP Creative Kevin Brummer. “But after the first class, we were all hooked. It was the perfect mix of learning a valuable skill and hanging out with friends—plus it was an opportunity to check something off our ‘Man Cards.’”

Brummer went on to explain: “Many asked, ‘why welding?’ For some of us, it was an interest in building and repairing; others used it to inspire their artwork. But regardless of our reasons, we all expanded our creative problem-solving skills. That’s the beauty in taking courses like that—being able to assess situations from different perspectives, in all aspects of life.”

So what’s next for this crew of handymen? Brummer said they’re currently accepting ideas for their next educational opportunity, extending the invitation to everyone in the agency.

“We have a couple courses in mind, but nothing’s been decided just yet. All we know for sure is that welding is just the beginning of what we hope to become yet another awesome Seed tradition.”
